CENTRAL, LA (WAFB) - A play at a high school football game in the Baton Rouge are a couple of weeks ago has made its way into the national spotlight. The behind-the-back pass during Central High's showdown with Zachary caught the attention of ESPN and many others.
With the score 13-0 in the first quarter, the "gotcha" play was called on a two-point conversion. It worked like a charm.
"One, it's a misdirection play, which on this particular night was effective," said Coach Sid Edwards. "Two, for fun. I mean, these are high school kids and like to have a good time. And at the same time, we're not out to embarrass the opponent."
The ole "behind the back to the drifting end" play was just one of a series of scores by Central that night. The final was 58-0. Quarterback Will Briscoe says that pass to Cedric Davis was first born when the two were horsing around in practice back in August.
"We were actually playing around at practice and he saw me throw it," Briscoe said. "We were just joking around really about and he said, ‘When are you gonna throw a pass like that in a game?' I was like, ‘When you let me.'"
Edwards has an arsenal of trick plays. One of those features a player doing somersaults while motioning down the line.
"We have run many wacky things over the years, some even more wackier than this, but I had no idea it would get this much attention," Edwards said. "It's very interesting. I wasn't expecting nothing like this. I was expecting maybe get on Sportsline or something like that. Now, all my friends call me, texting me, ‘You're on like ESPN.' It's great. It's a different feeling."
The Wildcats are 7-1 this year.
