BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Some Baton Rouge business owners don't have fancy alarm systems, but they sleep soundly every night with no fear of burglars because for them, man's best friend can be a criminal's worst nightmare.

A typical day at Ragusa's Automotive on Government Street in Baton Rouge consists of customers coming and going, lots of banging, and mechanical equipment constantly in use. However, things change pretty quickly once night rolls around. Owner Blaze Ragusa puts all his trust in two dogs. He's been renting them to protect his customers' cars for the past ten years. "I don't have to worry about a thing," Ragusa said. "I know they're taking care of my place of business."

Every night, like clockwork, dog owner Kenneth Knighten drops them off. For almost 30 years, he has owned OK Guard Dogs, a Baton Rouge business that rents out nearly two dozen of his precious pooches to help protect a client's property. "I care a lot about these dogs," Knighten said. "All of them are my best friends."

"They seem to be the most effective deterrent I've had in 19 years of business," Ragusa chuckled. "I look at them as my nighttime employees. That's the way I see it." Dogs like Chloe, Flossie, and Tinkerbell train with Ken almost every day. Don't let the names fool you. They train to protect and if you get in their way, watch out! "These dogs are not dangerous dogs. There's a lot of difference between guard dogs and vicious dogs," Knighten said.

Knighten says he'll always have a special bond with his dogs and he'll continue to deliver on his sign's simple promise of old-fashioned protection. "Everybody wants to know when I'm going to retire. I'm not," Knighten said.
