LAROSE, LA (WAFB) - Sheriff Craig Webre says a middle student shot himself in the head after allegedly firing a shot at a teacher inside a Lafourche Parish school and missing.
He was taken to a hospital where he was listed in critical but stable condition Monday afternoon. The shooting happened Monday morning at Larose-Cutoff Middle School.
Sheriff Webre says the 15-year-old boy, whose named was not released, pointed a handgun at a teacher, then fired over her head. He then went into a bathroom and shot himself.
The student was rushed to a hospital and a sheriff's spokeswoman says he is listed in critical condition. The school was locked down following the shooting.
The sheriff said there's no indication the teen had been in trouble with the school or with law enforcement. Also, he'd never been in a class taught by that teacher.
Several other students described him as a quiet teen who never talked about guns or violence. He was a year or two older than most of his classmates.
