BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - No. 1 Southern women’s basketball is moving on in the SWAC Tournament after a 51-44 win over No. 8 Mississippi Valley State Tuesday night.
“I knew we were going to have to do it as a unit,” said head coach Carlos Funchess. “We didn’t have that one person that was going to score 20 to 25 points every night. So, everybody chipped in and it was truly a great team effort.”
Southern was in control and led by 10 in the third quarter, but Valley came back swinging. A three-pointer from Ronni Williams gave the Devilettes the lead.
After going back and forth, the Lady Jags trailed by one until Skylar O’Bear knocked down a three-pointer to give her team the lead, 41-39.
On the next possession, a layup by LaKendra Bassett tied the game at 41.
But Brittany Rose came through for the Jags, as she knocked down a three-pointer to make the score 44-41 with just under a minute to go.
Southern hung for the 51-44 win and will head to Birmingham to play in the semifinals Friday against Grambling.
