BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The East Baton Rouge Metro Council gave the green light Wednesday evening to for Baton Rouge to renew a contract for red light cameras.
The city’s old contract for the equipment expired recently and under this new agreement, leaders have the option to renew or make changes at the end of each year. This comes not long after the city was slapped with a class action lawsuit from a group claiming tickets from those devices are unconstitutional. Despite that, the council approved the item, but not without some hesitation.
“If there is an issue, especially if there’s an issue with the enforcement of this, and to keep the program running, it’s just inviting extra monies to be made,” said Councilman Trae Welch, District 1.
A similar lawsuit in the New Orleans area was successful, but that decision is currently being appealed.
