Woman accused of severely beating child with belt, wooden stick

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A woman accused of repeatedly hitting a boy all over his upper body is behind bars facing child abuse charges.

Court documents state Brenterica Vessell, 28, of Baton Rouge, was arrested Tuesday.

According to the probable cause report, deputies with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office were contacted because the boy ran away from school. It added when found and questioned, the boy claimed Vessell had physically abused him.

The report stated deputies examined the boy and found bruises on his back, chest, arms, face, and neck.

According to the PC, Vessell admitted to using a leather belt and small wooden stick on the boy.

It added she claimed the child has been diagnosed with mental illnesses, but has not been taking his medication because he ran out of it and she had not taken him to the doctor to get the prescriptions refilled.

Vessell was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on a charge of cruelty to juveniles.

Bond has not been set.
