ASCENSION PARISH, LA (WAFB) - A couple has been sentenced to jail time after their 2-year-old child was abused and left in critical condition back in early 2018.
The 23rd Judicial District Court says on Jan. 15, Lee Barrient III, 28, of Prairieville, pleaded guilty to two counts of cruelty to juveniles, while previously, on Aug. 13, 2018, Rikki Dyson, 20, of Gonzales, also pleaded guilty to the same charges.
Officials say back on Feb. 8, 2018, detectives with the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to a local hospital after being told a 2-year-old child had been admitted for injuries that indicated child abuse. Medical staff told detectives the child had been brought in by his father, Barrient, and stepmother, Dyson. The child suffered from severe bruising and bleeding on the brain. The investigation showed the child sustained these injuries while Barrient was “correcting” the child.
Barrient admitted to investigators he may go too far sometimes when correcting his children, but that he would never intentionally hurt them.
Barrient and Dyson were both arrested.
After pleading guilty, Barrient was sentenced by Judge Jason Verdigets to 20 years in prison with credit for time served. Ten years of the sentence is to be suspended. After finishing his sentence, Barrient will serve five years of probation.
Dyson was sentenced by the same judge to 10 years in prison with credit for time served, to be suspended, and five years of probation.
